Cunning: Scaling the Ladder

A terrible darkness
Crept up upon me,
An impenetrable gloom
That afflicted and penetrated everything,

Stuck in the mud,
Mired in physical
And mental paralysis,
Like an insect;

But at first
I did not see it,
And then could not fathom
What to do:

I sat frozen
In place
On the edge
Of the bed,

Where I had
Sat down
With the intention
Of changing my socks;

But then, suddenly
I remembered,
‘I have to MOVE!
GET UP!’

Slowly, slowly,
First one sock, and then the other,
First one slipper,
And then the other,

Then, while keeping the darkness in view,
Foot, foot, foot, foot,
Out to the kitchen to start breakfast,
Then back to the computer to write this account,
By which time the gloom had receded.
